Nissan’s major electric innovation is currently on display at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas and reported by the site Voiture Valk. It is a dual-motor all-wheel drive configuration currently being tested on a Leaf. The goal is to eventually integrate it into an electric distributor.

The development of a new electric powertrain at Nissan is not really a surprise, as the Japanese brand is preparing a new battery-powered model that will be presented alongside the Leaf. But Nissan took advantage of CES in Las Vegas to share more about this new configuration, which is not yet very common among mainstream manufacturers.

It is called “e-4ORCE” and will be part of Nissan’s upcoming electric crossover. Instead of the single electric motor of the Leaf, two units (one per axle) drive this lifted prototype of the Leaf. You guessed it: it’s all about all-wheel drive.

Nissan announces that it has developed a special traction control system for this new configuration, which we should see on a Leaf car by 2021 at the latest. It remains to be seen whether Nissan will offer all-wheel drive as an option on the Leaf in the future, as other brands like Tesla can do with their cars sold with two or four-wheel drive.
