An online health platform refers to a digital service that centralizes medical functions that were previously scattered: appointment scheduling, document storage, teleconsultation, secure messaging with a doctor. Their adoption has progressed in recent years, but their actual effectiveness depends on technical criteria that most patients are unaware of when signing up.

Interoperability of health platforms: the technical criterion to check first

The term often appears in official documentation without being clearly explained. Interoperability refers to a platform’s ability to exchange structured data with other systems: the Shared Medical Record of My Health Space, the MSSanté messaging system, or the software used by healthcare professionals.

In practice, an interoperable platform automatically transmits a teleconsultation report to the patient’s record, without the patient needing to download a PDF and then manually upload it. The ranking of services connected to My Health Space explicitly evaluates this point, alongside security, ethics, and GDPR compliance, according to the CI-SIS interoperability framework and the decree of June 20, 2025.

Before choosing a platform, it is possible to access My Health 360 to consult resources that detail the available digital health services and their features.

A platform that does not communicate with My Health Space forces the patient to duplicate their efforts. Test results remain siloed, prescriptions do not transfer, and the primary care physician sees nothing of what happened during a remote consultation. Interoperability conditions the continuity of the care pathway.

Access settings in My Health Space: what the patient controls

My Health Space was automatically opened for all insured individuals. This default opening means that the record exists, but it does not mean that its content is accessible to all professionals without distinction.

The user has several concrete control levers:

  • Hide a specific document so that it does not appear to consulting professionals, while keeping it in their personal space.
  • Block access for a specific healthcare professional, for example, after changing doctors or in case of disagreement over information sharing.
  • Manage access in emergency situations by defining in advance which documents remain visible to a care team intervening without an appointment.

The digital record is not a simple passive storage space. Taking the time to configure these settings transforms an administrative tool into a true lever for medical follow-up. A patient who has never opened the settings of their space potentially leaves sensitive documents accessible by default.

Practical case: follow-up of a chronic condition

A patient being followed for a chronic illness sees several specialists, a general practitioner, a pharmacist. Each can upload documents to the space. The settings allow certain reports to be visible only to the primary care physician while leaving biology results accessible to the entire care team.

This level of granularity prevents a consulted professional from accessing the entire history unrelated to their specialty.

Teleconsultation and tele-expertise: two distinct practices not to be confused

Teleconsultation directly connects a patient and a doctor via video. The patient describes their symptoms, the doctor makes a diagnosis, and can write a prescription. The consultation is billed as a standard act.

Tele-expertise exclusively concerns exchanges between healthcare professionals. A general practitioner seeks the opinion of a specialist on a case, without the patient being present during the exchange. The specialist analyzes the transmitted documents and provides a structured opinion.

This distinction changes how a patient uses a platform. Teleconsultation replaces a trip to the office. Tele-expertise speeds up obtaining a specialized opinion without multiplying physical appointments, which reduces wait times in areas where access to specialists remains complicated.

What the platform must guarantee for teleconsultation

  • An end-to-end encrypted video stream, compliant with CNIL requirements on health data.
  • The ability to transmit documents (photos, test results) during the consultation, not just before.
  • The automatic sending of the report to My Health Space if the platform is registered.

European Health Data Space: anticipating upcoming changes

The European regulation on the EHDS (European Health Data Space), which came into effect on March 26, 2025, provides for a gradual deployment of cross-border exchanges of medical data. The priorities focus on patient summaries and electronic prescriptions.

For a patient, this means that eventually, a consultation conducted in another EU country could directly feed into their national record. Platforms designed solely for national use will need to adapt to integrate these additional data flows.

This regulation does not immediately change the daily routine of medical follow-up, but it establishes a framework that will render closed platforms obsolete. Checking now if a service mentions its roadmap towards the EHDS provides a reliable indicator of its sustainability.

The choice of an online health platform relies less on the interface or design than on its ability to communicate with the existing medical ecosystem. A well-connected tool to the Shared Medical Record, carefully configured by the patient, and compatible with future European requirements covers the essentials of what digital medical follow-up can offer today.
